As a Somerset libraries volunteer there are a variety of different ways that you can get involved and support your local library. From meeting and greeting, helping with activities and events, supporting the Library teams or assisting customer with digital skills.

Our fantastic volunteers bring their experience, knowledge and skills. They support libraries to deliver a range of opportunities and activities to our customers that also benefit the wider community.

As a libraries volunteer you can support your local library in one of the following roles.

Activities and Events Volunteer

This is a great opportunity to develop a variety of skills. You will get the opportunity to support the Library team and to help set up and run activities and events, which could include, Baby Rhyme sessions, Lego Clubs, Craft activities, Reading/Poetry groups, Knit and Knatter groups and Health related activities

If you have a flair for design, you could also support by producing posters for activities and events or helping to prepare displays in the Library.

Library Meet and Greet Volunteer

This is a customer-focused role and provides the opportunity to meet new people, gain experience and work as part of a team. You will provide library customers with a warm and friendly greeting as well as helping them use self-service kiosks and advising them about events and activities taking place in the Library.

Team Support Volunteer

Being a Team Support Volunteer provides you with the opportunity to get involved in a mixture of customer service and back-room book stock and shelving tasks.  You might also choose to help with events and activities. This is a great opportunity to develop your communication and customer service skills, as well as acquiring new skills.  If you love working as part of a team this role may interest you.

Summer Reading Challenge

This is a great volunteer opportunity for anyone 13 yrs +

You will support the Summer Reading Challenge that takes place in libraries across Somerset from July – Sept. This involves registering children and young people who are joining the challenge.  You may be helping young people to choose books, recording books read as well as encouraging them and celebrating their success as they make their way through the challenge. Applications open in May. Details on how to get involved will be posted to the website during May.

Requirements

  • Undertake an induction and training
  • DBS (for some roles) - at no cost to volunteer
